Overview
‘Against the Current’ explores water, memory, and materiality through a tactile typographic publication that translates environmental change into a spatial reading experience.
Context
The Selwyn River is treated as a living system rather than a static landscape. The work frames environmental change through narrative and emotional connection.
Approach
The project uses print as a physical medium, where tactility, layering, and the concertina format reflect movement and time. Environmental transitions shift from clean to polluted, abundance to scarcity, and swimmable to unswimmable. The structure reinforces continuity, allowing the narrative to unfold as a connected flow.
Outcome
The publication operates as subtle activism, exploring freshwater degradation through typography, material, and sequence.
